I can’t fill it’s been ten years since this movie came out. It’s had an immeasurable impact on the animation field and movies in general. At the same time, its flaws are evident. The humans ogle as plastic as the toys, and the fur on the dog is droll. Computers have near a long plan in ten years.

Whether this movie was any suited or not, it would have been an notable milestone. Fortunately, it succeeds on an entertainment level as well. The yarn is masterfully told revealing dwelling points and character equally. The movie is extremely comical as well; with lots of jokes for the adults in the audience and some classic lines I quote all the time. Plus it introduces us to a Pixar staple, the climax that will not cease.

Pixar has released vast DVD’s from the launch, and this two-disc residence is no different. The movie is transferred directly from the digital files, so the record is perfect. Sound is astounding in two separate 5.1 surround tracks. Many of these extras are from the Ultimate Toy Box release of a few years ago, and they are well worth having. The commentary is very informative. The deleted scenes are consuming, but it’s certain why they were deleted. The fresh features looking attend at the movie from ten years later are fantastic as well.

This is a ground breaking movie that is unbiased as considerable fun to inspect as it is historic. I hadn’t watched it in quite some time and was reminded fair how fun it is. I’ve got to contemplate it more often.

10 years. 20 years. It will be 50 years and this movie won’t bag venerable. It doesn’t matter that animation is 100 times more detailed and cooler today than it was in 1995, when the movie first came out. The strength of this movie is in the legend. There is so remarkable territory to peruse on this flic, and you have so distinguished fun while you survey it, that you will never grow tired of it. And, with a 2.5-year musty who loves to peep Woody once and again, I can shriek you it really doesn’t bag venerable, no matter how many times you notice it!

The second disc does a honorable job of accompanying the Pixar classic, going into the legendary details that have made Pixar’s DVDs illustrious. There is plenty to sink your teeth into, for the die-hard fans and those who are simply a bit tantalizing alike. The entire package is a movie for all ages, for the ages. Gather it and devour it once and again. The truth is you can never go inappropriate with Woody and Buzz Lightyear!

Considering they stopped shipping the previous Storyteller and Greek Myths DVD’s this will be what you will be seeing in stores. The first-rate news is the MSRP on this collection is actually less than the release brand of the new Storyteller collection and about the same stamp of the release of Greek Myths disk. You’ll be getting the best deal ever offered with this collection.

If you don’t currently have both collections I recommend getting this. Even if you have one of the two collections the impress point makes it worthwhile (sell your mature plot and place even more) . Obviously if you have neither DVD this is the perfect opportunity to lift up some of the best family entertainment out there.

I had only seen some of these when they first aired as portion of “The Jim Henson Hour”, but I was totally enchanted by them, and am thrilled to have them now in their entirety, to revel in and fraction with my occupy kids.

What I really like about them - besides the stories themselves, the amazing station, costume, and puppet designs, the acting and so on - is that they resurrect the importance of *telling*. There is a admire of language in Minghella’s scripts (”a princess of sweetness and cherry pie”, “he heard a song that sounded like hello and goodbye”), and in John Hurt’s charming performance, that reminds us of the importance of the human screech… even as we are seduced by the lovely visuals.

This is ample stuff, some of the best old-school fantasy every produced for TV, and - despite the puppets and magic - in no blueprint geared to kids. It’s “general audience” in the unusual sense: everybody gathered together around the Storyteller’s exciting bid, different ages envisioning different things as the stories play out.

A word on the second batch, the Greek Myths: These are at a distinguished lower wattage than the European stories, and I’m not certain why, as the stories themselves are colossal. But Michael Gambon’s Storyteller lacks the charm of Hurt’s, the scripts (not by Minghella) are more perfunctory, and perhaps the stories are too familiar to have great surprise. They are beautifully produced, and have some first-rate performances (Derek Jacobi as Daedalus, Robert Stephens as Hades), but they aren’t as necessary as the earlier group. (But given the outrageous stamp for the whole space, they’re well worth owning, even if they lack the “repeatability factor” of the earlier batch.)

Yes, the video quality is glorious wobbly, and the extras are non-existant… but The Storyteller triumphs anyway!

Using his high school teaching experience as impetus, director Mike Akel made Chalk to encourage school reform through enlightening viewers to the challenges teachers face. This comedic mockumentary capitalizes on four teachers’ frustrations during the course of their school semester, by interviewing them individually as well as placing them together in scenes depicting faculty meetings, school spelling bees, and happy hours at a local bar. Allegedly real, though clearly ironic in the style of Christopher Gust’s Waiting for Guffman or Spinal Tap, Chalk’s characters expose themselves as actors through subtle hints, such as when P.E. Coach Webb (Janelle Schremmer) states her heterosexuality outright in her introduction to the camera. Later, Mrs. Reddell (Shannon Haragan), a teacher struggling with her promotion to Assistant Principal, clumsily breaks up a schoolyard fight with physical comedy reminiscent of the Three Stooges. Two history teachers, Mr. Lowrey (Troy Schremmer), the bumbling beginner, and Mr. Stroope (Chris Mass), who aggressively pursus the Teacher of the Year award, act as polar opposites to illustrate how neither whimpy coddling nor harsh militarism will work in the classroom. As Lowrey complains in the teacher’s lounge that someone has stolen his yogurt from the fridge, Stroope’s in the field shooting cans to blow off stress. Ultimately, the comedy makes way for touching scenes showing Mr. Lowrey’s major improvement, and the realization that America loses many of its best teachers to messy academic infrastructure, lack of teacher support and financial hardship, making Chalk entertaining but also politically astute. –Trinie Dalton

Like seeds of a dandelion blowing in the wind, the plot of Tampopo wanders in several directions, following the lives of a quirky collection of characters. At the heart of this film is a young widow named Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto), who is struggling to make ends meet by running a noodle restaurant. Goro (Tsutomu Yamazaki), a truck driver, saves Tampopo’s young son from being beaten by a group of school girls and is rewarded with a bowl of very bad ramen (noodles). Goro tells Tampopo the awful truth about her cooking and she asks for his help. Together they search for the perfect ramen recipe.

Intersecting this part of the plot are several smaller and less well-realized stories. Koji Yakusho, who stars in Shall We Dance, appears as a sensuous gangster who would rather play with his food than eat it. Then there’s the mysterious Noodle Master who lives with a group of street vagabonds and a young executive who knows how to order food from a French menu, but not how to preserve the dignity of his superiors.

While the film as a whole feels somewhat disjointed, writer-director Juzo Itami manages to infuse Tampopo (which means “dandelion”) with a sense of Japanese joie de vivre that is worth experiencing. Take notes during the “soup scenes” and see what you can cook up for yourself. –Luanne Brown

Longtime host Marlin Perkins may seem a bit square now–compared to the more rambunctious, media-savvy likes of Steve Irwin–but despite his stiff posture, his sincere and infectious delight at the animal world came through. The African Wild collects ten episodes, all focused on gorillas, elephants, giraffes, hippopotami, lions, cheetah, and other fauna of Africa. Among the standout scenes are Dian Fossey (author of Gorillas in the Mist) reuniting after a three year absence with the mountain gorilla family she’d spent 10 years befriending; Perkins and co-host Jim Fowler using a road grader to cull a hippo from its herd; and several impressive encounters with elephants, which look like they could crush a jeep like a toy. The editing and staid dialogu may feel old-fashioned (these episodes are from the 1970s and ’80s), but the wildlife footage remains as beautiful as ever. –Bret Fetzer
